Power of Ten Update

 East Ramapo Stakeholders Update

In this issue:

  1. Report on Albany Lobby Day
  2. Support Music in East Ramapo on March 16
  3. Volunteer Orientation and Rally on March 24
1)  Student and Parent Lobbying Success Story:
students with Ellen JaffeeA group of about 35 students, parents, and education activists headed to the capital by bus.  We attended a BIG rally of about 1200 people from around the state.  Speakers included Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee.  Then we headed to the Legislative Office Building to meet with Ellen Jaffee and David Carlucci.  Students talked about how cuts will impact the programs and sports which they have benefited from.  Assemblywoman Jaffee said she is supporting the extension of Fair Share tax reform and fighting for education restorations. Following our meetings, the group joined hundreds of other attendees in a march to and demonstration outside of the Governor's office.  Students enjoyed this, some even reported that they got hundreds of others to follow their chants.  Following the protest we were invited by Ellen Jaffee to the Assembly floor, and the students were recognized officially on the floor during session.

The next day Senator David Carlucci said that he will support an the extension of Fair Share tax reform and targeting this recaptured revenue for education funding!!!

"We're making cuts to our most vulnerable populations," Carlucci said. "I think it's unfair that we'll cut funding for them and yet give a tax break to our highest earners." This is exactly what the students travelled all the way to Albany to say.  It is wonderful to see that our representatives are listening.  What a great lesson in democracy for our students.

Please call to thank Senator Carlucci for prioritizing education:  His district office number is 845-623-3627

Thanks also to PTA members, the Alliance for Quality Education, and Ms. Santulli of Spring Valley High School for making this unforgettable event for the students happen.

2)  Support Music at Board Meeting on Wednesday March 16:
Please come support the instrumental music program in the elementary schools at the Board Meeting on Wednesday March 16.

The meeting will start at 7:00 PM at 105 S. Madison Ave, in Spring Valley.

We will have a quick rally before the meeting, starting at 6:45. Bring a sign and show your support for the music program which has produced so many scholarships and our championship winning marching band!!!

3) Volunteer Orientation and Rally Night:
Can you help organize your neighborhood to vote on May 17?  Maybe you would like to make some phone calls, or just come help out on election day?  Learn all about your opportunities to be a part of this campaign at our RALLY on Thursday March 24, at 7 PM at the RCC Annex, 185 N.
